TV equipment

Traditional TV sets are not digital but instead use a different technology (which is called analogue) and will not directly receive digital TV signals.

In upgrading to digital or a Pay TV service you must decide which television(s) you want to continue to use. You will need to upgrade each of these televisions so that they are capable of receiving the digital or Pay TV service you choose.

Almost any TV can be converted to digital with the right set top box but remember, the more televisions you wish to upgrade, the more it will cost.

Unless upgraded, any TV which uses the old TV network will not work after the old TV network switches off on 24th October 2012.

Buying a digital television

If you go to buy a new television or a set top box you may have noticed the number of labels on the packaging. These labels represent the networks or countries where the televisions are intended to work.

RTÉ has developed a labelling scheme to be used on digital receivers which are SAORVIEW approved. This will help TV viewers to identify televisions and other receivers which will work to receive Saorview. The SAORVIEW approved Logo is:

SAORVIEW approved logo

RTÉ has informed us that only equipment carrying the Saorview approved logo is guaranteed by RTÉ to work on SAORVIEW.
As with traditional televisions, a SAORVIEW approved TV set can also be used in conjunction with a Pay TV service.

What do I do if someone comes to my door selling digital TV?

Pay TV service providers may sometimes call to your door looking for new customers. RTÉ (SAORVIEW) has indicated that they have not commissioned or endorsed anyone to sell Saorview products door to door.

The National Consumer Agency (NCA) provides information and advice to consumers and has provided the following dos and don’ts to help you deal with doorstep selling:

• Do know your rights
• Do ask for identification
• Don’t be rushed or pressurised into a quick decision
• Do ensure that the product or service is best for you
• Do ask about how you can cancel if you change your mind (and get a cancellation form)
• Don’t forget to get details of the offer in writing.
